Recycle and Refashion Clothes

Giving an old garment a new lease of life by revamping and refashioning it is a very rewarding activity. It is not only a great way to save money, but also it is the perfect way to get unusual and striking garments that will be quite like anything from the high-street.

Tips for Recycling and Repurposing Clothes

If you are about to embark on a revamping project, here are some tips to help you:

  • Embellishments – adding adornments to garments is a lovely way to bring some style and flair to plain items. A simple shirt or top, for instance can be transformed by the addition of some applique items. Fabric yo-yos are also a very simple way to add decoration, and these little fabric discs are also a great way to use up odds and ends of fabric.
  • Dying – simple dying techniques can give a wonderful array of results and provide some unique materials for different sewing projects. This is also a useful way to disguise stains in clothes and to give them a new lease of life.
  • Buttons and Zips - when altering clothes it is also useful to rescue and save any useful items such as buttons and zips. Pieces of lace, velvet or other fabrics can also be cut from garments for future use. These can provide a great source of materials for embellishing projects.

There's something rather special about a handmade apron. For me, it's the secret dream that by putting it on I will immediately become Doris Day and the Domestic Goddess in one swift tie of the apron string. Of course, the reality remains that even the fanciest apron cannot disguise that I am no Doris Day - or indeed domestic goddess.

If you are an apron lover too - or want to make one for a friend - then there are some wonderful free apron sewing projects available. These range from quick and easy aprons from tea-towels, through to wonderfully retro styled aprons. For more information see - Free Apron Sewing Patterns and Projects.

What Does 'Not For Commercial Use Mean?'

Some free sewing projects and tutorials are made available on the understanding that they are 'not for commercial use'.

Over the years I've had a few people ask what this means and whether it means that they cannot make items to sell for charities and good causes.

'Not for Commercial Use' means that people cannot use the pattern or project to make items that they are going to sell - where ever the proceeds are going.

However, some people sharing their patterns may be happy to make an exception if you are selling the products for a good cause. It is always worth contacting the person who is publishing the pattern to see if they are prepared to make an exception in your case.

If you intend to use a free sewing pattern to make items to sell then always check to see if there are any restrictions stated. These are often listed under 'terms of use' or the information is provided on the project page.
